Yaeyama Specialty Black Sugar (Individually Packaged)

Black sugar is a product made by squeezing and boiling sugarcane until it solidifies.

Black sugar is rich in vitamins and minerals (inorganic substances). Its main component, like other sweeteners, is carbohydrates (sugars) which serve as an energy source. However, by incorporating black sugar into your daily life, you can gradually intake essential vitamins and minerals for your health.

In Okinawa, black sugar began to be produced during the Edo period, more than 300 years ago. The manufacturing method was learned from China, and sugarcane cultivation became popular throughout Okinawa. Since then, sugarcane has become a representative agricultural product in Okinawa. However, currently, the majority of it is used to produce white sugar, with only about 5-6% becoming black sugar. Presently, in Okinawa Prefecture, black sugar is produced and shipped outside of the prefecture only on the eight islands of Iriomote, Ie, Aguni, Tarama, Kohama, Iriomote, Hatoma, and Yonaguni.
